• Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
(AONB) •
an area of countryside considered to have significant landscape value -
designated by Natural England

• Heritage Coast •
a strip of UK coastline having notable natural beauty or scientific significance -
designated by Natural England

|
• National Park •
an area of relatively undeveloped and scenic landscape which remains largely in private ownership,
managed by its own National Park Authority -
designated by Natural England, subject to approval by the Secretary of State
|

• National Nature Reserve (NNR) •
nature reserve of national significance for biological or earth science interest -
designated by Natural England
|
• Marine
Nature Reserve (MNR) •
a marine reserve of national significance, designed to conserve marine life and
geological or physiographical features of special interest -
designated by the Government

• Local Nature Reserve
(LNR) •
area of local importance, usually owned by local authorities,
who may pass its management onto County Wildlife trusts or other local environmental bodies -
designated by local authorities

• Site of Special Scientific
Interest (SSSI) •
any area of land which is considered to be of special interest
by virtue of its fauna, flora, geological or physiographical features -
designated by Natural England

Environmental Stewardship •
an agri-environment scheme that provides funding
to farmers and other land managers in England who deliver
effective environmental management on their land -
administered by Natural England

Special Protection Area (SPA) •
to safeguard the habitats of migratory birds
and certain particularly threatened birds -
designation under the European Union Directive
on the conservation of Wild Birds

Special Area of Conservation (SAC) •
to protect the 220 habitats and approximately
1000 species which are considered to be of European interest -
defined in the European Commission Habitats Directive

Ramsar Site •
wetland of international importance -
The Ramsar Convention (an international treaty for
the conservation and sustainable utilisation of wetlands)

World Heritage Site •
a site of either cultural or physical significance -
decided by the international World Heritage Programme
administered by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee

• Department for Environment, Food and Rural
Affairs (Defra) •
responsible for environmental protection,
food production and standards, agriculture, fisheries and rural communities

• The Environment Agency •
to protect or enhance the environment, taken as a whole so as
to promote the objective of achieving sustainable development

• Natural England •
responsible for ensuring that England's natural environment,
including its land, flora and fauna, freshwater and marine environments,
geology and soils, are protected and improved

• Forestry Commission •
responsible for forestry, its mission to protect and expand Britain's
forests and woodlands and increase their value to society and the environment
