Who are we?

The National Trust relies upon contributions and donations from members and work from volunteers to maintain its properties and land.  There are now over 80 National Trust Volunteer (NTV) and property-based groups throughout the country.  NTV groups carry out practical conservation work and may also help out at events.

The South Downs NTV group was started in 1988 by several volunteers who were carrying out voluntary work for other conservation groups.  The first work party was held on 12th June at Highdown Hill near Worthing, clearing storm-damaged trees from the Great Storm of '87.

The group has now grown in stature and carries out about 1,500 hours of conservation work on behalf of the National Trust each year.

Members of the group come from all walks of life and enjoy a friendly and welcoming atmosphere on site as well as at play!

Membership of the group is open to anyone over the age of 16, though most members are between the ages of 25 and 45.  We also welcome students working towards the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.

What do we do?

The tasks we undertake include: downland, heathland and woodland clearance, footpath maintenance and fencing.  Additionally, in the summer, we provide stewarding at open air events.

No special skills are required and all tools are provided; with a little bit of enthusiasm and a willingness to join in, you'll soon feel at home in the countryside, learning about the conservation and management of National Trust properties and land.
